I am excited to announce that I will be spending a month in Havana, Cuba this summer, studying Spanish, learning about the culture and generally enjoying this currently-in-the-spotlight travel destination! (If you're a facebook friend or Twitter follower, you definitely already know this and are aware of my excitement about it). :)
I leave for Miami next Friday (May 29th) and will be making the most of my few days there, exploring South Beach, Little Havana, and other attractions, before we fly to (Big) Havana on May 31. The group includes me, eight other students, and our professor. We'll be studying Spanish for four hours a day during the week, living with host families in the Vedado neighborhood of Havana, exploring the city through visits to its museums and cultural hot spots, and taking weekend excursions to other cities in Cuba. I'm very excited, since this was pretty much my last chance to study abroad and hone my Spanish skills while in college, and I've never been able to travel anywhere for this long or this in-depth before. I'm also really glad I get to experience Cuba while it still maintains its suspended-in-time charm--before diplomatic relations with the US completely open up again.
We've been told that the internet is unreliable and expensive, so I don't know how much I'll be able to get online over there (it certainly won't be as often as, for example, when I was in Europe), so most of my blog updates will probably take place after I get back at the end of June. I plan to take a zillion pictures of this photographer's paradise and do my best to experience and capture everything as I go. Until next time!
